5. Study skills through social learning

The aim of this Austrian recipe from Julia Thurnher and Sigrid Stiglitz from the preparation programme of the Universities of Vienna, is to incorporate the acquisition of study skills into “regular” language training.

Ingredients:

* A course designed to focus on independent ways of learning.
* The appropriate teaching aids
* An evaluation at the end of the project

Preparation:

With the enhancement of personal, social and cognitive skills as goals, educational methods are selected that focus on these goals in a particularly intensive way. (The focus is on open learning, work with portfolios, excursions, journals and learners…)

The selected methods are then to be used exclusively in teaching where possible.

Side dishes:

The method’s success can be assessed by a questionnaire at the end of the course. Indeed, the questionnaire has elicited comments about this approach, indicating for example that self-confidence is improved, that there is a better feeling in the group, and that the teacher’s role in the open teaching method is appreciated.
