6. Languages tailored to engineers

For a personal study programme to be tailored for each student, no dreams must be left out , at least if you follow this recipe from Igors Tipans at the Technical University of Riga in Latvia.

Ingredients:

* A diverse group of foreign students, who (in this case for the purposes of a technical study course) are learning a foreign language
* An individual assessment of prior knowledge and areas of weakness
* Professors who are not only interested in their subject, but also in the language

Preparation:

Interviews are first conducted with the persons interested in a course of study, thereby ascertaining: language skills, aptitudes and preferred learning methods. Then an individual package for the language teaching activities to be attended is put together with each student based on the lecture schedule.

A special flavour:

All being well, students will encounter teachers who will tailor studies to their own requirements. Since this recipe benefits both parties, it makes life easier for the teachers as well: In other words, this lays the foundations for future success, because the first semester students are at a similar level, and thus nobody feels left out.
