3. Presentation as a subject for a subject

Students are taught about their subject and presentation techniques at the same time. This is the idea behind a recipe by Jon Ruijmschoot and Chris van Veen from VASVU – Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Ingredients:

* Parts of the curriculum that can be presented by the students themselves.
* Information and training material for the topic of communication and presentation
* Practical potential applications for learning acquired through the presentations

Preparation:

The students are first informed of the fundamentals of the oral presentation e.g. research, excerpts, structuring, application of visual aids, verbal and non-verbal approaches. (In this case: three lessons on the subject of physics, taught in a foreign language.)

The content is then organised into manageable parts, which can be developed and presented.

Following a development phase the respective presentations are performed (with videotaping and comments).

A practical application of what has been learnt (in this case an experimental assignment in the physics laboratory) forms the conclusion, followed by a written report and a final oral presentation on the results of this assignment.
