3. Playing the role of a doctor in the classroom
The aim of this recipe by Aukja Spoelstra and Barbara van Diest from the James Boswell Institute within the University of Utrecht is to introduce students to their future career area.
Ingredients:
* A group of students with a common career and study objective (in this
case, medicine)
* Role-playing as a vocational training element to this course
* Videotaping the role-playing and discussing the recording
Preparation:
Begin with informal reflections on your personal experiences in your chosen career area (in this case doctors, surgeries and hospitals), and at the same time, provide information on the relevant culture and language in the country of study (in this case the Netherlands).
Then go on to perform role-play exercises in a doctor’s surgery. This role-playing is taped and the videos are analysed by students as a group.
A special flavour:
In this scenario, the exercises enabled students to reflect on being employed as physicians in their own countries, as well as on the differences in the doctor-patient relationship in both cultures.
