8. Other countries – other customs
Studying abroad can be made easier with cultural training. Here, a recipe from the Czech Republic by Pavla Necasova from Karls University in Prague is described.
Ingredients:
* Students about to begin a semester abroad
* 8 Instruction units
* Students with overseas experience as a contact person
Preparation:
A questionnaire and a discussion are initially used to determine levels of cultural awareness. This involves the definition of the concept of “everyday culture” and knowledge of foreign cultures.
Sources of possible intellectual misunderstandings are then cleared up using various creative techniques (associograms, brainstorming, etc.) and an effort is made, through such techniques as role playing, to work out ways to avoid or to cope with misunderstandings.
Side dishes:
Meetings with students who have already stayed in foreign countries, and relevant literature from the destination country round off this educational dish on our intercultural menu.
