3. Songs as the mirror of a nation

Regional studies may be taught in a particularly striking way using music. The following recipe by Andrea Schmitt from the preparatory college of the University of Saarbrücken in Germany is proof of this.

Ingredients:

* Students who are expected to become familiar with the culture of their country of study
* Songs that reflect a specific section of society (recent contemporary history in this case)

Preparation:

The lyrics and music of selected songs on the chosen topics are made available to the students.

Thereafter they are expected to determine the backgrounds of the individual lyrics (concepts, names, events, etc.).

The results are then presented at the course meeting, which means that the whole group gains knowledge on all topics covered.

Menu suggestion:

This project can be embellished, by the students bringing songs they themselves have selected, which are then worked on by their classmates.
