4. A city becomes the classroom

Training need not confined to fixed locations, at least according to this recipe by Martina März and Matthias Bohun from the university preparation programme of the Universities of Vienna in Austria.

Ingredients:

* While learning a language, a student group is expected to get to know the culture at the same time
* A programme of excursions and field trips, which take up the major part of the course time

Preparation:

A series of excursions, museum visits, field trips, etc. are arranged with quite varied objectives, which provide the students with basic information.

This promotes independent exploration of the city. Information must be gathered everywhere and experiences are reported in writing. These reports help to advance the language work.

Menu suggestion:

By compiling written reports on the individual excursions, the students came out of the course with “travel guides” written by themselves for their place of study, almost as a by-product.
