4. Student self assessment
The following recipe from Horst Nellessen from the preparatory college at Münster University in Germany covers the transition from school assessments to self assessment, which is needed for university.
Ingredients:
* Young people preparing for a university programme of study who are learning
the language taught on this course, and acquiring basic knowledge of the desired
field of study.
* A test at the beginning of the course which can be repeated later
* Materials for self-organised learning and counselling sessions on learning
techniques, etc.
* Attendance of lectures in the desired course of study, to find out what
knowledge must be acquired
Preparation:
Ascertain how much students know at the beginning. Subsequently an individual plan is prepared with each student, covering: What is to be learned? Where can you obtain information? How do you best learn on your own?
The formation of study groups and mutual support will improve communication between students. Throughout the course, regular meetings take place, which can help the students to solve individual problems. In addition, students try out courses, which they will later attend. In practice, this taster motivates them to work more.
The test at the beginning of the course is repeated at the end. This makes it possible for the students to quantify their learning progress.
